Our work in trying to establish a work of mercy in conjunction with local Christian communities is still underway. Students for a Fair Society G.E.M. (Guidance, Education, and Mentoring) will be hosted by five Christian communities throughout the city of Steubenville each one day for each day of the week.
A complete GEM Modus Operandi and Host Community agreement form can be downloaded by clicking here.
The local community that has committed to hosting SFS G.E.M. is the Tower of Power Church, 1320 Maryland Avenue, Steubenville, Ohio.
Each day five students will provide guidance, basic k-12 education assistance, and/or mentoring to younger members of the local community. Having 25 volunteer students provide an hour and a half (or so) a week for 10 weeks of the semester would increase our involvement in the city by 375 hours a semester.
What makes SFS G.E.M. unique in comparison to volunteering at "the Y" or the "Boys and Girls Club"? Our volunteers will not only be instructed to provide basic homework assistance, but as young, radically faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, G.E.M. ministers will unabashedly, however if the scenario calls for it, with great discretion, offer as a guide and source of all that is good and necessary the God-Man we call Jesus. When homework is not a roadblock in the child's flourishing, G.E.M. ministers will have the Sacred Scriptures on hand and will cheerfully accompany a child in prayer, if the child so chooses.
Volunteers operate through SFS but may not be SFS members.
FUS education majors may have this service count in part for their field hours requirement.
Check back or e-mail Kelly, the SFS GEM Coordinator, at (kjeberhart[at]gmail[dot]com).
